The 1960s: The Founding Years
The 1960s marked the beginning of Brunswick Academy, founded with a vision to create an academic environment where students could excel both academically and personally. The school started small but quickly grew, developing not only its academic offerings but also its extracurricular programs, particularly in athletics and school traditions. These years were a time of monumental growth, constructing buildings, expanding the campus, and winning athletics competitions in football, basketball, and baseball — setting the groundwork for future success.



1964
Established in 1964, Brunswick Academy operated from four buildings in areas surrounding Lawrenceville for a total enrollment of 266 students under headmaster Charles Mahlon Saunders, Jr.
School Year 1967 – 1968
Students were allowed to participate in football for the first time and the JV team won the conference championship. Brunswick Academy observed its first homecoming the weekend of October 28, 1967, after a game with Albermarle. This year also marked the first time that the Vikings Voice newspaper was printed – 8 pages crammed with stories of club activities, sporting events, and student life.
The 1970s: Expanding Horizons
The 1970s were a defining decade for Brunswick Academy, bringing campus expansions, new traditions, and athletic milestones. The addition of a gymnasium, auditorium, classrooms, and cafeteria complex in 1970 set the stage for a growing student body and thriving extracurricular programs. This decade also saw the formation of the Middle School, the establishment of the Honor Code, and the beginning of cherished traditions like the Senior-First Grade March and Daisy Chain Ceremony. Academically and athletically, Brunswick Academy continued to excel, earning championships in softball, basketball, and cheerleading while expanding opportunities in chess, music, and student government. The decade ended with the corps majorettes arriving home with the Grand Champions of Virginia in August 1997.



1970
A major campus expansion introduces a gymnasium, auditorium, classrooms, and a cafeteria complex, providing new spaces for academics, athletics, and student life.

1971
The first Junior-Senior Prom is held in the new gymnasium, transforming the space into a “Moonlight and Roses” wonderland. That same year, the Chess Club is founded, challenging students to sharpen their minds.
1973
Brunswick Academy introduces a Middle School, reorganizing the student body into three divisions. Grades 5-8 move into the “green building,” marking a new era in student development.
1974
Headmaster Hugh P. Nolen celebrates 10 years of Brunswick Academy, emphasizing, “The success in the future, as has been true of the past, depends on the concerted efforts by many fine citizens of The Academy who can say, ‘We have given our share, we have done our best, and the result is evident.”
This year also welcomes Dave Newsome, who will serve in multiple roles over 42 years, and the Varsity Softball team wins its first VAAC Championship. The Varsity Softball team, coached by Gwen Walton, also brings home the pennant as VAAC Champs for the first time.
1976
The beloved Senior-First Grade March tradition begins, spearheaded by our first headmistress Mrs. Jessie Wood — a tradition still carried on today. Mrs. Jean Grizzard arrives to teach Middle School Science, eventually becoming headmistress 10 years late.
Brunswick Academy also commemorates America’s Bicentennial with a flag-raising ceremony led by the Student Council. The Athletic Club also worked on improving the Lady Vikings’ softball field.
1977
The Honor Code and Honor Council are introduced, instilling core values of honesty, self-respect, and leadership in students. That same year, the Varsity Cheerleading squad earns its first championship trophy, and students embark on the first Brunswick Academy trip to Europe. Yankee Doodle premiers as our first musical.
1978
Brunswick Academy wins its first Varsity Boys Basketball VAAC Championship, solidifying its growing reputation in athletics. Meanwhile, Home Economics is introduced, offering students valuable life skills.

The Christmas Chapel tradition begins in the gymnasium, where students hold candles and sing carols in a warm, heartfelt celebration of the holiday season.
The 1980s: Academic Excellence & Innovation
The 1980s were a decade of championship victories, academic expansion, and new traditions at Brunswick Academy. From establishing the first golf team in 1984 to the first Triple Crown in athletics to the formation of the Alumni Association, PreSchool program, and new extracurriculars, this era shaped the Academy’s growing legacy. Leadership milestones, faculty additions, and student achievements further strengthened academic excellence and school spirit. The 1980’s ended with Brunswick Academy’s first-ever fashion show in 1989!


1981
Brunswick Academy’s Varsity Boys teams made history, winning their first “Triple Crown” Championship, earning VAAC titles in football, basketball, and baseball—a testament to the school’s athletic dominance.

1982
The first Alumni Association was formed by Mrs. Sadie Simmons (alumna). This spring, enrollment reached 625 students and in the fall the first team bus was purchased, soccer became an official sport organized by Mrs. JoAnne Edmonds. In the winter, the band performed its first concert and faculty received their first Christmas bonuses. The Class of 1982 financed a new service ramp for the school buses.
1983
The Student Council Organization (SCO) prepares a special luncheon to honor teachers.
The Brunswick Academy Band, under the leadership of Headmaster Mr. Michael Redman, becomes a key part of school spirit, playing at pep rallies and games.
1985
The PreSchool program is launched, designed as an enrichment experience emphasizing socialization, hands-on learning, and fun activities three days a week.
The Varsity Tennis team earns its first-ever Conference Championship, marking a new milestone for the program.
1986
Brunswick Academy adds Physics to its curriculum, taught by the newly appointed Headmaster, Mr. Bill Long, bringing advanced science education to students.

1988
In the fall of 1988, Mrs. Jean Grizzard stepped into a leadership role. That same year, student life flourished with the formation of the Hi-Y Co-Ed Club, where 35 students came together under the mentorship of Mrs. Ames Tillar, Mrs. Gloria Pernell, and Mr. Garwood to foster leadership and service.
The school also welcomed Senator Richard J. Holland for a special Constitution Day assembly, where students had the rare opportunity to hear his address.
The 1990s: Growth and Technological Advancements
The 1990s saw Brunswick Academy expanding its academic, athletic, and extracurricular offerings. To start, enrollment courses became available in partnership with Southside Virginia Community College, allowing students to earn college credits while still in high school. The Viking Varsity Football team made history in 1995, achieving an undefeated season and winning the State Championship under Coach Dennis Moore and Assistant Coach Robert Coltrane. The decade also saw significant investments in technology, with the addition of two new computer labs ensuring students across all grades developed digital literacy (1995-1996). These years also established new traditions, from the founding of Brunswick Academy Theatre in 1997 to the launch of the school’s first annual science fair in 1999, fostering creativity, curiosity, and school spirit for generations to come.
1996
Brunswick Academy students extended their community outreach when a group of juniors and seniors, dressed in prom attire, entertained residents at Brian Center, bringing joy to the local community. The Brunswick Academy Golf team also celebrated a historic first, winning the Conference Tournament Championship under Coach Jeff Rich.
1997
The Brunswick Academy Theatre was founded by a dedicated group of parents, grandparents, and supporters who wanted to allow students to experience live theatre. The first production, The Secret Garden, debuted in March, with both faculty and students taking part in the Broadway-inspired performance.
Meanwhile, twenty BA students traveled to Richmond to participate in the Model General Assembly, gaining hands-on experience in government, and Mrs. Allen gave a special tour of her Pumpkin Farm to BA students.
1998
Brunswick Academy’s nineteenth annual Virginia Beef & Dairy Festival brought alumni, patrons, and friends together for a day of food and fellowship at the Lawrenceville airport. Later that year, the PTO funded the Illumination Project, installing outdoor lighting around campus to improve visibility and security.
1999
The school launched its first annual science fair, bringing together students from all grade levels to showcase their knowledge and creativity in science and innovation.
The 2000s: Globalization and Community
The 2000s were a time of growth and community spirit at Brunswick Academy. Students embraced service through the Student Cooperative Organization (SCO), leading initiatives like the Thanksgiving Food Drive and Angel Tree Drive in 2000. The school also continued fostering academic exploration, with students traveling to Norfolk in 2001 to visit the U.S. Naval Base and Norfolk Zoo. In 2003, Brunswick Academy made its mark in student leadership when Berkeley Horne was elected Lt. Governor of the Model General Assembly, becoming only the second BA student to win a major office at the event. The decade also brought major campus improvements, including new administrative and academic buildings, a state-of-the-art library, and enhanced athletic facilities.
2006
Brunswick Academy celebrated a major milestone with the opening of several new buildings, including the Administrative Office, Elementary School, Middle School, and the James T. Butler, Jr. Memorial Library. At a ribbon-cutting ceremony on May 10, Board President Richard Short officially opened the administrative offices, which now house Human Resources, Development, Admissions, and the Head of School. That same day, Mrs. Butler, the widow of James T. Butler, Jr., cut the ribbon to dedicate the new library, ensuring students had access to expanded learning resources.
2006
Later that fall, students began their first school year in the newly constructed buildings, marking a new era for Brunswick Academy. The football field also received major upgrades, including stadium-style, handicap-accessible bleachers, a new press box, improvements to the concession stand, and an upgraded sound system, thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Athletic Club.
The 2010s: Excellence in STEM and Arts
The 2010s at Brunswick Academy were filled with both new traditions and advancements in technology, facilities, and student engagement. The decade began with the dedication of a new wooden gymnasium floor in December 2012, followed by the implementation of QuickSchools, a student management system that streamlined student data management in 2013. Brunswick Academy also embraced technological advancements, introducing SmartBoards and iPads to enhance the learning experience. The resource program was launched in 2014 to support K-12 students with remediation and enrichment needs and a new grading scale was introduced in the 2018-2019 school year, reflecting the school’s commitment to continued growth and excellence as the decade winds to an end.

Dedication was held in the fall of 2023 in honor of Veteran coach, Dennis A. Moore


2014
Brunswick Academy commemorated its 50th Anniversary with a grand celebration on January 25, 2014, at the Golden Leaf Warehouse. More than 450 guests danced to J.B. and the Get Down Browns, enjoyed a photo prop booth, and relived memories from the school’s early years through a slideshow. The event celebrated the school’s rich history and its enduring community.
2016-2017
Significant athletic upgrades, including the addition of a field house complex at the Fleshood Softball Field, a refurbished brick backstop at the C. Holton Harrison Baseball Field, and a new scoreboard for better visibility. The C. Holton Harrison Baseball Field was rededicated in May 2016. That same year, the gymnasium also received a new sound system.
The Big Vikes and Little Vikes program was introduced in the 2017-2018 school year, fostering connections between seniors and first graders through shared activities and celebrations.

August 17, 2018
A brand new Brunswick Academy tradition was born as the school held its first Honors Convocation for grades 6-12. The ceremony featured guest speaker Pastor Dan Jarrell from New Hope Baptist Church, who spoke about the importance of honor and integrity. During the event, students signed the Brunswick Academy Honor Code, which is now proudly displayed in the Middle School and High School. The ceremony was an impactful moment, marking a commitment to character and values for the school’s students.
2018-2019
In 2018, the Brunswick Academy Fishing Club was established, participating in BASS Nation, and the school marked the first Honors Convocation for grades 6-12 with a special ceremony featuring speakers like Pastor Dan Jarrell. The year also saw the Varsity Volleyball team finish first in the conference for the first time in school history, with Coach Kenny Warf named VCC Coach of the Year. In the Winter of 2019, the Vikettes dance club was formed.

October 10, 2019
During the Varsity football game on October 10, 2019, Brunswick Academy honored Coach Dennis A. Moore, who dedicated 38 years to the school as a coach and 26 years as Athletic Director. He was recognized with a monument sign in his honor at Dennis A. Moore Field. This tribute celebrated his legacy, including coaching the football team to State Championships in 1995, 2001, and 2002 and Conference Championships in 1981, 1986, 1989, 1990, 1992, and 1995. Coach Moore was also named Football Coach of the Year in 1995, 2001, and 2002.
The 2020s: Leading Innovation
Brunswick Academy entered the decade with resilience, innovation, and record-breaking achievements. Amid the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the school upheld traditions, adapted graduation ceremonies, and launched Viking P.R.I.D.E. (Personal Responsibility in Delivering Excellence, 2020) to reinforce character development in lower school students. Academic offerings expanded with the introduction of a Career & Technical Education (CTE) Diploma in partnership with Southside Virginia Community College (2020-2021), allowing the upper school new now allow three programs depending on student goals: General, Academic, and Honors. Technology integration advanced with school-issued Chromebooks and Google Workspace for Education (2021) and Brunswick Academy earned full accreditation from the Virginia Association of Independent Schools (VAIS) after an intensive 10-year evaluation process concluding in 2022, receiving commendations for leadership, faculty, and student programs. The Fellowship of Christian Athletes expanded student life (2023) and athletics continued to excel this decade. In 2024, the school honored its 60-year legacy and continued to showcase unwavering excellence academically, athletically, and artfully.

The Class of 2021 joined their first-grade friends to carry out the Senior-First Grade March. Our Big Vikes and Little Vikes did not hold hands as they traditionally do; instead, they held a ribbon as a representation of the ties that bind us
June 20, 2020
Graduation was postponed from May 29 and a baccalaureate/commencement ceremony was held on the morning of June 20 at the Dennis A. Moore football field. The 40 graduates wore masks and adhered to safety guidelines while Rev. Greg Hand of Pleasant Hill Christian Church delivered an inspiring message, followed by speeches from the Class Salutoriatn Davis Roberts and the Class Valedictorian Sadler Lundy. The Head of School Mrs. Brittney Wediman presented the graduates with their diplomas.

2020-2021
The Brunswick Academy Fishing Team secured the State trophy at the Joseph Thomson Memorial 6-Man Virginia State Championship with a total catch of 27.87 pounds, marking the first win for a school in the North division. The Cross Country team, coached by Mrs. Sidney Burke, dominated the regular season, winning three of seven meets and placing second in the others, ultimately clinching the VCC Championship. The 2021 graduating class also gifted eight flags now displayed in the Administration and High School parking lots.
2022-2023
The Varsity Football team went 11-0 in the VCC and advanced to the VIS8FL Div. II State Championship, defeating Kenston Forest 84-14 in the semifinals. Coaches Bubba Weidman, Dwayne Farmer, Joe Jackson, John Randolph, Doug Hite, and Tim Powell led the team to victory. In Spring 2023, the school launched its first-ever Track team, and the Tennis team was reestablished, which finished 3-3, coached by Heather Fergeson, James, and Mary Allgood.

Spring 2024
Brunswick Academy’s Grandparents and Special Friends Day featured a “Diamonds and Gems Showcase,” where each grade embodied a different gemstone. Under Mr. Christenbury’s musical direction, students performed songs and skits, delighting the audience with their creativity and enthusiasm.

2024
Coach Daryl Clary’s Lady Vikings Softball team went 12-0 in the VCC, winning the State Championship 5-1.
The Varsity Tennis team, coached by James and Mary Allgood, finished undefeated in the VCC, taking the tournament title.
Coach Sigmund Jones and Mr. Harrison Jamison led the Varsity Soccer team to an 8-0 VCC record.
